ABOUT Department

The Department of History is one of the oldest departments of Nazareth Margoschis college at Pillaiyanmanai.In the Pre- University course,History was one of the subjects.  B.A Degree in History was introduced in 1972 when the college a co-educational institution.

The staff members of the Department of history are the pioneers of the college.Among them Prof C.S. Christober,  Prof S. John Gabriel, Prof A. SanthoshkumarAsirvatham, Prof (Mrs) Jasmine Chandramathi, Prof M.JohnPackiyanathan and Prof. R. Peter Perinbarajaplayed a vital role in shaping the Department.

          Prof S. John Gabriel headed the department from 1973 to 1995.The elevation of Prof S. John Gabriel as principal of the college in 1982 was aland mark in the history of the Department. In 1987, Prof. R. Peter Perinbarajajoined as a member of the department in the place of Prof A. Santhosh Kumar Asirvatham who was transferred to St. John’s College Palayamkottai.

          After the retirement of Prof S. John Gabriel, the department was headed by Prof C.S. Christopher who served as head of the department from 1995 to 2006. In 2001, Prof. R. Thomas,a lecturer of St. John’s College,Palayamkottai joinedin the Department.

Prof. Mrs. Jasmine Chandramathiworked as head of the department from 2006to 2012. Miss K. Geethanjali was appointed asLecturer on 13^th August2007. At thetime of the NAAC visit in 2008.Prof Mrs. Jasmine Chandramathi was the head of the department.

Prof. R. Thomas, an alumni of the college, became the head of the department on 1^st June 2012. Dr. K. Samuel Thangaraj Kores was appointed as Lecturer on 16^th July 2015 and Dr. M. Sathiya Bama on 25^th February 2019.

M.A Degree in History was introduced in 2016 under self-Finance Scheme. Ms. R. Muthu Jeyavani and Mr. E.Walsa Ebenezer were appointed as Lecturers, and Ms A. Jenifa Paulin, Mrs. R. BersiyaLoyisal, Dr. Raichel C. Raj and Dr. G. Chandra joined as Lecturers.

A series of academic and non-academic programmeswere organized by the staff members of the department. It has successfully organized a One-DayNational Seminar on “SOCIAL JUSTICE”.

The department has initiated a move for an alumni of history which was named as ‘MARGOSCHIS HISTORIANS MEET’ON 3rd Feb 2018. Mr. Pauli Jeyachandranwas selected asPresident, Prof G. Andrews as Vice president and Mr. L. Ramaiah as Secretary.

The department is organizing the Parent-Teachers Meeting twice in an academic year.  The mentors, the class advisors,serves as a link between the Parent and the Students.

The department has organized an Outreach Programmein Thiruvalluvar Colony, an adopted village of the department. In collaboration with the Primary Health Center, Udayarkulam, a Medical Camp was organized in the adopted village.

To enrich historical and cultural values among the students, the department is organizing Field Visits and Study Tours to places of historical significance regularly. With the aim of introducing Research Programm in the Department ,the staff members are sincerely contributing  their time and energy.
